Falck acquires a percentage of EMI, the leading ambulance and home care company in Latin America

Falck has acquired 63.1 percent of EMI Holdings Management S.A., Panama (EMI), the parent company of the leading Latin American ambulance and home care group of companies headquartered in Colombia, whose extensive team of professionals and specialists responds to medical emergencies in six countries in the region. This acquisition, combined with Falck’s existing ambulance services in Brazil, will constitute the foundation of the development of Falck’s emergency services in Latin America.

Falck, a company with a 100 year history of attending emergencies in Europe, is the largest privately owned emergency medical services company in Europe. The company is active in 25 countries on five continents, employing more than 19,000 people. In 2010 Falck’s turnover was USD 1.6 billion.

With the acquisition of a majority stake in EMI, Falck will be able to offer a wide range of emergency medical services and products to people in need in Colombia, Uruguay, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama and El Salvador where EMI is the market leader with an outstanding track record in customer satisfaction.

EMI’s business model is mostly subscription-based with close to 800,000 subscribers in Latin America. The company operates more than 250 ambulances with 3,200 employees and has a comprehensive network of family doctors and ten medical clinics.

EMI was unified as a group in 2006 when the equity fund manager Tribeca Asset Management integrated a number of Latin American ambulance and homecare companies.

“We are very enthusiastic about the partnership with Falck, whose experience and infrastructure will bring enormous benefits to our subscribers, and Falck’s know-how in other types of emergency medical services will broaden the spectrum of services we can bring to the communities where we operate,” says Luc Gerard, Tribeca CEO.

Under the term of the agreement Falck (63.1%) and Tribeca Home Care Fund (36.9%) will pursue joint businessopportunities in Latin America, economically one of the fastest growing regions in the world.

Combining Falck’s current ambulance business in Brazil with EMI, Falck now holds a strong position within the growing pre-hospital services sector in Latin America.

“We are looking forward to quickly and competently assisting people in Latin America in case of sickness or injuries. In addition, we have now created a platform from which we wish tooffer Falck’s other assistance services in the future,” says Falck CEO Allan Søgaard Larsen, who expects that Falck will expand its services to additional countries in Latin America.
